Round Rock ISD – Safe and Secure Entrances – 6 Campuses

Programming, Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documents and Construction Administration for main office redesigns at 6 elementary campuses in order to provide a safe and secure entry and accomplish improved office function. Scope included adding security cameras and remote entry door control technology.  Some campuses also included the addition of new workstations to replace freestanding desks.

Chisholm Trail Middle School – New Science Building

Originally built in 1981, KAH Architecture  gave the facility a facelift. New wood floors line the facility and lighting upgrades sparkle throughout the halls and classrooms. Air Conditioning was added to the original gymnasium areas and a new football stadium restroom facility was completed for home and visiting patrons alike.

In 2000, Chisholm Trail received new multi-purpose facility additions, including a 4,800 sf secondary gym, a 990 sf stage, a 400 sf weight room, new restrooms and much needed storage spaces.

Continuing to oversee the longevity of the Chisholm Trail Middle School, KAH completed a 10,700 square foot science wing addition in 2012. The addition houses 4 new science laboratories, 2 Prep Rooms, 1 Project Research Room, 1 Group Study Room, and boys and girls Restrooms. Built adjacent to the existing school, this addition enclosed a new courtyard to serve as an outdoor science learning area.

Expansive glazing and 12 foot ceilings in each classroom allow for a sense of openness and connectivity between indoor and outdoor learning environments. Large awnings and sun screens were designed to block direct solar heat gain through the glazing while the awnings serve as exterior shelves from which natural light can be reflected throughout the classrooms.

Additional site improvements include a new bus drive aisle on the east side of the campus, a new parking lot, and improvements to the storm water system.

Hubbard ISD – New Gymnasium

This new, indoor athletic facility for the Hubbard School District includes a gymnasium, bleachers, locker rooms, concessions, offices, training rooms, laundry and lobby. The bleachers sit mounted on a structural surface allowing the lockers and training area to be placed below – a much needed space limitation solution. The uniquely designed concession area holds dual purpose: to serve visitors both inside the lobby as well as on the outdoor fields. This two way operation saved the district space and expense while still creating a first class experience for visitors and spectators.

Goose Creek Consolidated ISD Safe and Secure Entrances – 31 Campuses

Safety and Security improvements on 31 district campuses, administrative facilities and     operational facilities in order to provide a safe and secure environment.  Scope includes     renovations to vestibule entries, exterior door lockable/card access, camera systems at exterior doors and interior halls and fencing drive thru controls.

The Goddard School – Lakeway

Newly constructed school. KAH provided all interior design services, including; concepts, finishes, patterns and color stories.

Joe Lee Johnson Elementary School – RRISD

This new elementary school is currently under construction and will open Fall 2016. KAH was contracted to help assist with the selection and procurement of the furniture, fixtures and equipment. KAH also assisted with the interior color concept to ensure continuity between interior finishes and the furnishings and textiles selected. This school is a new concept for the district and will be a vessel for all new elementary schools in the Round Rock ISD future. We want to encourage collaboration and flexibility to facilitate all users and functions.

Cedar Ridge High School

This two-story, 375,000 square foot public high school is divided into four academies: visual and performing arts; science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); international business and professional studies; and the freshman program. Each academy sits in a line along the west side of a central courtyard; on the east side are a performing arts center, a cafeteria, a media center, and an athletic complex.

Envisioning Cedar Ridge as something like a graduate school, KAH Architecture in association with Perkins+Will aimed to foster the coziness of a close-knit academic department while creating ample gathering space. Students stay within their academy clusters on the west side of the courtyard and mix together in the cafeteria, theater, and other communal spaces on the east side.

Flyover roofs span the courtyard to connect the tilt-up concrete structures. The roofs provide shade and capture breezes, a strategy that harkens back to the dogtrot houses popular in 19th Century Texas. A covered walkway along the courtyard serves as a kind of porch for the rooms alongside it, from the cafeteria to the drama classroom, where students use the walkway as an impromptu stage. The concrete on the interior and exterior is painted in neutral stone hues, with limestone veneer in the lobby and other public spaces to add regional flair.

To support cost-effective design and a shortened construction schedule, the school utilized tilt-up concrete panels. Different than a typical tilt-up design as a construction type, Cedar Ridge High School employs other regional materials accompanied with the concrete to establish a more sophisticated, non-traditional aesthetic. The use of concrete, complimented by the natural limestone, reinforces the permanence of the architecture and anchors the building to the site. Ribbons of glazing are strategically integrated into the architecture maximizing the indoor/outdoor connection while also reducing solar heat gain.
